Cape Clawless Otter Aonyx capensis

The Congo (Cameroon) Clawless Otter (A. congicus) is sometimes recognized as a separate species but is very similar to the Cape Clawless.

Total length 110–160cm; tail 50cm; shoulder height 35cm; mass 10–21kg (max 25kg).

Identification pointers: Quite large size; dark brown coat (appears black when wet) with white lips, chin, throat and upper chest. Finger-like digits. On land, ambles along with back arched. Larger than Spotted-necked Otter and lacks neck spots. Unlike the latter, Cape Clawless Otter may be found away from permanent water. Occasionally confused with much smaller Water Mongoose (p.248).
